EVENT: Tradition be damned — Creative Music at Seven Stars
Mali Obomsawin is an award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician and a Native American from the W8banaki (Abenaki) First nation at Odanak. She is a Smithsonian Folkways Recordings artist and the recipient of the International Folk Music Association’s “Rising Tide Award” in 2022. Her performances span a wide variety of genres, including Americana, indie rock, and jazz. In addition, she is an accomplished player of the acoustic bass.
It is in this latter incarnation that she will perform with Thetford’s Bill Cole at the Seven Stars Art Center in Sharon on Friday, July 15, 2022, at 7:00 PM. Her double bass, an instrument derived in Europe as part of the classical symphony orchestra, will pair with Bill’s didgeridoo, descended from a 1500-year lineage developed by the aborigines of Northern Australia.
West meets — antipodean.
Neither musician will adhere to the traditions associated with their respective instruments. The performance will center on new creation. It will be spontaneous and without a musical score, an approach often referred to as jazz improvisation for want of a better term. In other words, it will be unique.
Admission will be $15.
Mali and Bill will also be performing at the Front Porch Concert at 1590 Tucker Hill Rd in Thetford on July 17th at 1:00 pm, along with Taylor Ho Bynum (cornet, trumpet, trombone) and Ras Moshe (saxophone, flute, percussion).
Seven Stars Art Center is at 5126 VT RT. 14 Sharon, VT 05065 sevenstarsarts@gmail.com 802-763-2334
